Position Summary

The College of Public Health at the University of Georgia, pursuant to its mission and values, invites applications for a faculty position specializing in computational social sciences to begin August 1, 2024. This tenure-track position is an academic 9-month appointment. The successful candidate will be appointed at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank, commensurate with the candidates experience, and will maintain an academic appointment in the Department of Health Promotion & Behavior ( HPB ).
We are seeking to hire an individual whose scholarship aims to advance the use of digital tools in mHealth and telehealth to facilitate the generation of health-related data that informs personalized and community-level interventions. The successful candidates work will also contribute to a better understanding of complex health outcomes and exposures. The new faculty member will contribute to the areas of digital health and the use of technology to capture demographic, socio-demographic, physiological, environmental, and/or other health data within real-world clinical and/or public health settings to ensure that research addresses real-world needs and increases health equity. The selected candidate would be expected to offer advanced graduate training in quantitative methodology, such as computational modeling, dynamic analyses, and data visualization. Ultimately, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to an established curriculum in HPB, develop and maintain a rigorous nationally- and internationally-recognized research program, secure funding from external sources commensurate with rank and experience, publish in peer-reviewed scholarly outlets, and mentor students.

In addition to contributions to the cluster, the selected candidate will be expected to synergize interdisciplinary collaboration efforts within the College of Public Health, specifically the Departments of Health Promotion & Behavior, Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and/or the Institute of Gerontology.
The position is part of a campus-wide Presidential Interdisciplinary Faculty Hiring Initiative in Computational Social Sciences that aims to recruit 70 faculty members who will educate students and advance research in data science and artificial intelligence (AI). The majority of UGAs newly recruited faculty will focus on the fusion of data science, AI, and computational social sciences in cross-cutting areas such as health and medicine, biomanufacturing, infectious diseases, integrative precision agriculture, ethics, cybersecurity, resilient communities, and the environment. Specifically, the candidate for these positions should bridge research efforts between Applied Social Science Interventions for Community cluster hires across the University in the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, College of Public Health, and School of Social Work.

About the College/Unit/Department

The College of Public Health was established in 2005, is comprised of four academic departments and three research institutes and is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health ( CEPH ). The College has approximately 65 full-time faculty and 50 staff who serve an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students per year.
The Departments degree programs include a Bachelor of Science in Health Promotion ( BSHP ), Master of Public Health ( MPH ), Master of Public Health/Master of Social Work Dual Degree ( MPH / MSW ), and Doctorate of Philosophy in Health Promotion (PhD). The Department has 13 full-time tenured or tenure track faculty, four clinical faculty, and two instructors committed to instruction, research and outreach with the goal of improving the health of all. HPB faculty members have leadership roles in, and close involvement with, three interdisciplinary units of the College: Institute of Gerontology, Global Health Institute, and Institute for Disaster Management. Close ties also exist with other university units including the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Social Work, the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership, and UGAs Public Service and Outreach Units. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape future research directions and expand existing programs in the Department.
